Building a flu plan
It’s never too early to start thinking about next year’s flu season. When planning, GP colleagues should make economic decisions accordingly. Participation in the flu and Covid-19 programs is not mandatory.
Last year, SSLMCs observed that some practices were left with unused (and unreturnable) flu vaccines. This experience has influenced many stock ordering decisions for 2024/25. Additionally, the delay of the adult campaign to October 3rd and the national push for co-administration may impact this year’s planning.
To assist with this, the LMC has developed a ‘Quick & Easy’ planner that you can download. This tool may help you identify trends for your surgery and plan for the upcoming year.

A decision-making framework for practices
We recognise that some GP practices are considering opting out of the Seasonal Flu Vaccination Enhanced Service. Historically, this has been uncommon; however, given the significant challenges currently facing practices, it is an important moment to provide clear guidance. While it is essential to deliver high-quality patient care, practices must carefully assess their financial viability and sustainability. This guidance is designed to support practices in making informed decisions, emphasising the importance of evaluating the overall financial impact of participation.
