Job summary
Put medical education at the heart of your working week.
Are you a GP with a passion for teaching who would like education to be the main focus of your role?
This is an exciting opportunity to join WellBN in an education-led post, with the substantial majority of your working week dedicated to supervising, teaching and supporting medical students rather than routine clinical sessions.
You will oversee Year 4 and Year 6 medical students during their placements, helping them connect their learning with the realities of modern general practice. Through supervision, case discussion, feedback and teaching, you will support their development as confident, thoughtful and compassionate future doctors.
The role is particularly suited to a GP with an interest or background in medical education who enjoys helping students develop their clinical reasoning, consultation skills and understanding of patient-centred care.
Responsibilities
A predominantly educational role. The post comprises seven sessions dedicated to educational supervision, alongside one or two clinical sessions per week. We welcome job-share applications from GPs interested in sharing the educational and clinical responsibilities.
During student placements, the emphasis will be on education: overseeing the students’ learning, reviewing clinical cases with them, discussing their assessments and management plans, and providing constructive feedback.
Between student placements, clinical cross-cover is expected to support the wider practice team.
Your educational responsibilities you will:
- Oversee medical students from Years 4 and 6 during their general practice placements
- Provide teaching and supervision appropriate to each student’s stage of training
- Review clinical cases with students, helping them develop clinical reasoning and safe decision-making
- Support the development of consultation, examination and communication skills
- Provide constructive feedback and encourage reflection on learning
- Help students understand the breadth of general practice, including continuity of care, multidisciplinary working and the needs of a diverse patient population
- Create a welcoming learning environment where students feel able to ask questions and develop their confidence
Clinical contribution
Alongside your educational sessions, you will undertake one or two clinical sessions per week, maintaining your connection with patient care and the clinical work that underpins your teaching.
You will also provide clinical cross-cover between student placements. This is therefore a predominantly educational post with a defined clinical contribution, rather than a wholly non-clinical role.
Requirements
We are looking for a GP who combines sound clinical judgement with enthusiasm for teaching, strong communication skills and a supportive approach to student development. You will have:
- Full GMC registration
- MRCGP or an equivalent qualification
- Experience in general practice and managing undifferentiated clinical conditions
- An interest in teaching and supporting medical students
- The ability to explain clinical reasoning clearly and provide constructive feedback
- A commitment to continuing professional development, safeguarding and clinical governance
- A collaborative approach and a commitment to inclusive, compassionate care
- Eligibility to work in the UK and the ability to work across our three sites as required
Completion of a clinical supervisor course or experience in medical education is preferred
The role is particularly suited to someone who wants to develop or build on a career in medical education.
