Job Summary
The Director of Medicines & Governance is the executive lead for medicines optimisation, prescribing quality, clinical governance, regulatory compliance, audit and organisational assurance. The postholder will lead the pharmacy team, oversee governance systems and ensure the practice maintains the highest standards of patient safety, quality and compliance while supporting strategic development and continuous improvement.
Responsibilities
Medicines Optimisation & Prescribing Governance
- Lead the medicines optimisation strategy across all sites.
- Provide executive oversight of prescribing quality, safety and effectiveness.
- Develop systems to ensure safe and cost-effective prescribing.
- Lead medicines-related audits and improvement programmes.
- Monitor prescribing performance and benchmark outcomes.
Clinical Governance & Patient Safety
- Provide strategic leadership for clinical governance frameworks.
- Lead systems for patient safety, risk management and assurance.
- Ensure robust incident reporting and investigation processes.
- Promote a culture of openness, learning and continuous improvement.
Regulatory Compliance & CQC (Medicines)
- Lead CQC readiness and ongoing compliance activity (medicines)
- Coordinate practice-wide quality assurance programmes.
- Ensure policies and procedures remain current and compliant.
- Provide assurance reports to partners and leadership teams.
Quality Improvement & Audit (Medicines)
- Develop and lead the annual audit and quality improvement programme.
- Monitor quality indicators and service performance metrics.
- Use data to drive improvements in safety, quality and efficiency.
- Support innovation and evidence-based service redesign.
Leadership & Workforce Management
- Lead and develop the pharmacy and medicines management team.
- Provide mentorship and professional leadership.
- Promote staff wellbeing, engagement and development.
Contractual Performance & Business Improvement
- Support delivery of QOF and enhanced service requirements.
- Contribute to organisational strategy and business planning.
- Identify opportunities for efficiency and service improvement.
- Support achievement of contractual and organisational objectives.
Requirements
Person Specification – Essential
- Current professional registration with GPhC, GMC, NMC or other relevant body.
- Significant senior leadership experience within primary care or NHS services.
- Extensive knowledge of medicines optimisation and prescribing governance.
- Strong understanding of clinical governance, risk management and patient safety.
- Experience leading quality improvement and audit programmes.
- Knowledge of CQC standards, NHS contractual requirements and regulatory frameworks.
- Excellent leadership, communication and stakeholder management skills.
Person Specification – Desirable
- Independent Prescriber qualification.
- Postgraduate leadership or management qualification.
- Experience at PCN, ICB or system leadership level.
- Experience leading large-scale transformation programmes.
