Job summary
Medical Examiners are senior, independent doctors specifically trained to review deaths through a process of proportionate review, discussion with the attending practitioner and discussion with the bereaved. The Medical Examiner service delivers an independent review of all deaths in both the hospital and community setting.
This is a varied and interesting role which is non patient facing. It will be arranged as a regular weekly session alongside your existing clinical duties.
Responsibilities
Main duties
- Ensure compliance with legal and procedural requirements associated with the current process of certification and registration of deaths
- Scrutinise the certified cause of death offered by attending practitioners in a way that is proportionate, consistent and compliant with national guidance
- To discuss and explain the cause of death with next of kin/informants in a transparent, tactful and sympathetic manner
- Maintain comprehensive, timely records of all deaths scrutinised, enabling analysis to provide information to healthcare providers and the National Medical Examiners office
Requirements
- Full registration and licensed to practice with the GMC
- Applications are invited from experienced GPs (at least 5 years post GMC registration)
