Job summary
The Senior Lead GP plays a key role in providing visible clinical leadership within the practice and across Sussex Primary Care (SPC). This role focuses on maintaining high standards of clinical quality, governance, and safety, while supporting the professional development and supervision of clinical teams.
Working collaboratively with Practice Management, ACP Clinical Leads, and other SPC colleagues, the Senior Lead GP will help to standardise care, strengthen leadership structures, and improve service delivery across practices. They will contribute to the recruitment, retention, and development of GPs and ACPs, lead on quality improvement, and ensure CQC readiness and patient safety systems are robustly embedded.
This position also supports SPC’s innovative clinical leadership model — enabling GPs to focus on core clinical work, guiding ACP and non-medical prescribers, and shaping a resilient, future-proof workforce across the organisation.
Responsibilities
- Provide proactive and visible clinical leadership, supporting and guiding practice staff on quality and safety matters
- Develop and embed robust clinical governance systems, ensuring active participation by all medical staff
- Lead on clinical strategy, improvement planning, and quality assurance across the practice
- Collaborate with Practice Management, PCNs, and SPC leads to drive service improvement and staff development
- Oversee clinical quality and safety, ensuring best practice through NICE implementation, significant event reviews, and compliance with CQC standards
- Jointly act as CQC Registered Manager and Caldicott Guardian for the practice
- Coordinate practice education and supervision, ensuring clinical staff remain up to date with policy and guideline changes
- Provide supervision for GPs and non-medical prescribers in line with SPC’s Clinical Leadership Model
Requirements
We are looking for GP’s who:
- MRCGP Qualification
- Registered on the GMC GP Register with licence to practice
- On an NHS National performers list (England, Wales or Northern Ireland)
- UK based (necessity)
- Applications extended to overseas Tier 2 workers seeking sponsorship with relevant skills and qualifications
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Excellent clinical decision making skills
- A passion for healthcare
- Motivated and committed to developing the knowledge and skills required for the role and for ongoing professional development

We are a friendly, forward-thinking GP surgery with a supportive multidisciplinary team, including three GPs, an ACP Clinical Lead, ANP, Paramedic Practitioner, Prescribing Lead Pharmacist and Pharmacy Technician, supported by a brilliant nursing and admin team.
We use SystmOne, offer 15-minute appointments, and provide two protected GP Clinical Lead admin sessions per week to support leadership, quality improvement and mentoring (prorata) .
