Surrey and Sussex LMCs are aware of reports that orders for one of the influenza vaccines recommended for the 2026/27 season have been cancelled because of manufacturing and supply problems.
We recognise that this creates significant uncertainty for practices that have planned their flu vaccination programmes around these supplies. The timing of the announcement is particularly challenging, given the proximity to the start of the seasonal vaccination campaign.
At present, this appears to be a national issue rather than an isolated local problem. We also understand that the impact is likely to extend beyond general practice and affect other providers involved in delivering the flu vaccination programme.
Our advice at this stage is not to panic or make rushed decisions. We expect further information and clarification from national and regional NHS teams as the scale of the issue becomes clearer.
Practices may understandably be exploring alternative vaccine supplies. However, before committing to replacement orders, practices should carefully consider:
- Whether alternative products are eligible for reimbursement under the flu programme.
- The financial implications of purchasing vaccines at significantly higher cost.
- Whether revised vaccine costs could affect the viability of providing the service.
- The likely impact on delivery timelines and patient access.
Practices should also begin considering how they would communicate any disruption or changes to patients if vaccine availability affects planned clinics or appointment schedules.
If, after considering the available options, a practice concludes that it can no longer provide the service, the flu specification requires the practice to give the commissioner 28 days’ notice of withdrawal.
We are raising concerns about the impact on practices and will share further information as it becomes available.
